Lougou Archaeological Site

Lougou Archaeological Site is an archaeological site located in the Dosso Region, 350 km east of Niamey, the capital of Niger. The site is one of the oldest for the Hausa people, one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa, who live in the Sahel region and the Sudan region. The site includes a mythical stone symbolizing justice "Tunguma", in addition to the tombs of the Sarraounia queens of the Hausa people. The site is also the place where the Battle of Lougou (1899 AD) took place between the French army and the tribes of the region led by Queen Sarraounia Mangou, the ruler of Azna, a sub-group of the Hausa people.
