Attan Fortress is a strategic defensive site located on the summit of Mount Attan at the southwestern edge of the Sana’a Basin, overlooking the city of Sana’a. The fortress occupies a commanding elevated position and is naturally protected on three sides, while access is controlled through a single entrance on the eastern side. As part of the wider defensive system surrounding Sana’a, Attan Fortress played a crucial role in surveillance and early warning. Its builders engineered water-storage installations carved directly into the limestone bedrock to collect and preserve rainwater, demonstrating advanced adaptation to the mountainous environment, particularly during the Middle Ages.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, Sites of the Cultural Landscape and Heritage Landmarks in Sana’a.
