Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin
Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin is a historic mosque loctaed in Fes el Bali, Fez, Morocco. It was built in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri during the reign of the Idrisid Dynasty. The mosque was later expanded to become a scholarly center during the Marinid period was in the 13th 14th centuries. During the Saadian and Alaouite periods, the mosque was further expanded and new sections were added. In 1963, the mosque was transformed into a university in 1963, University of al-Qarawiyyin. The Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 as part of Medina of Fez.
