Berat Castle
Berat Castle

Berat Castle overlooking the town of Berat, Berat County,Albania. It was originally built in the 5th century AD by Byzantine emperor Theodosius II, and then it was subsequently rebuilt during the 6th century under the Emperor Justinian I and again in the 13th century by Michael I Komnenos Doukas who was the founder and first ruler of the Despotate of Epirus. Berat Castle was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra.
