Smahan’s Mountain Nature Reserve

Smahan’s Mountain Nature Reserve is a nature reserve located in the Dhofar region in the south of the Sultanate of Oman. The reserve is home to a diverse and unique group of plants, especially those that thrive in the streams and valleys south of the reserve, in addition to the presence of a large group of frankincense trees in the central plateau of the reserve, the largest of its kind in the region.
The reserve is also characterized by the presence of a large diversity of birds and wild animals throughout, in addition to marine mammals and turtles on its shores. Among the most important animals in the reserve are the Arabian leopard, the striped hyena and the Arabian wolf, in addition to the fox, mongoose and honey badger.
As for the herbivores, there are the Nubian ibex and the gazelle.
Smahan’s Mountain Nature Reserve was submitted in 2013 to the UNESCO Tentative List in Oman.
