Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve
Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, Canada. It is world-renowned for its outstanding fossil beds, Precambrian fossils, which date back 580 to 560 million years and represent some of the earliest complex multicellular life on Earth.
The fossils at the site include rare and intriguing Ediacaran creatures, which provide significant insights into the planet's earliest ecosystems and the genesis of sophisticated living forms. The name "Mistaken Point" was given by early European explorers who mistook the point for the entrance to Cape Race, a notable and historically significant place in Newfoundland.
Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve was inscribed in 2016 in the UNESCO World Heritage List in Canada.
