Lakes of Ounianga
Lakes of Ounianga are a series of 18 lakes located in the Sahara Desert in northeastern Chad. The lakes form an exceptional landscape characterized by its beautiful colors and amazing shapes.
The lakes are fed by the water accumulated in the aquifer, and the floating reeds cover nearly half of the surface of them, which reduces evaporation. Some of these lakes are home to aquatic animals, particularly fish, and this is because of their high-quality freshwater.
Lakes of Ounianga was inscribed in 2012 in the UNESCO World Heritage List in Chad.
