Xeedho
Xeedho
Xeedho is a traditional dish in Djibouti, given by a mother-in-law to celebrate her daughter's first marriage week. It features dried dromedary meat preserved in ghee, contained in a carved tree trunk, wrapped in foil, decorated with leather and shells, and enclosed in a basket.
This basket is then covered with fabric and placed in a bag representing a woman's clothes, with ropes tied around securely. An important wedding ritual, xeedho involves the bride's female relatives in its preparation, symbolizing the bride's family's honor and commitment.
Accompanied by gifts, a well-prepared xeedho signifies the mother-in-law's respect for the son-in-law, enhancing family bonds.
Xeedho was inscribed in 2023 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Djibouti.
