Thebes was an ancient Egyptian city located east of the Nile. Its ruins lie within the modern city of Luxor, Egypt. The city was inhabited from around 3200 BC. It was the eponymous capital of Waset, the fourth Upper Egyptian nome. Thebes was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
