Rock-Cut Tombs in Dhafar
Rock-Cut Tombs in Dhafar are a group of archaeological funerary monuments carved into the rocky hills surrounding the ancient city of Dhafar, in Yemen. These tombs date primarily to the Himyarite period (ca. 1st millennium BC to 6th century AD) and reflect the burial traditions of both elite and non-elite members of Himyarite society. The most significant example is the royal rock-cut tomb at Jabal al-‘Usaybiyah, which features a formal entrance leading to a deep rectangular burial chamber containing a sarcophagus and funerary offerings.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, The Archaeological Remains and Water Management Systems Himyar Kingdom in Dhafar.Elevation: 2956 m
