Najaf or an-Najaf al-Ashraf is a city located in central Iraq, south of Baghdad. It is the capital of Najaf Governorate. The city was founded by the Abbasid Caliph Harun ar-Rashid in 791 AD and it is renowned as the site of the tomb of Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib.
