King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, originally established as The College of Petroleum and Minerals in 1963, was the first institution in Saudi Arabia to offer higher education in petroleum and minerals. Located in Dhahran, in the Eastern Region, it became a university in 1975, expanding its curriculum to include science, engineering, technology, and business management. The university's architecture uniquely blends modernity with Arab heritage, complementing the desert surroundings.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, The Oil Industrial Heritage in Saudi Arabia.
