Gabès is a city and the capital city of the Gabès Governorate in Tunisia. It is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea at Gulf of Gabès. The oldest history of the city goes back to the Numidian and Carthaginian periods in the 1st millennium BC, and it later became important city in the Roman period and then in the Islamic period.
