The town is distinguished by its history associated with the M'zab Valley, as it is considered one of the oldest towns founded by the Mozabites (Ibadi Berbers) in the region. El Atteuf was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, as part of M'Zab Valley.
