It was founded in 1st millennium BC by Chaonians, who were an ancient Greek tribe that inhabited the region of Epirus (North-west of modern Greece and southern Albania). The city was also the place where the Treaty of Phoenice was concluded (The treaty that ended the First Macedonian War). The city maintained its existence until the Byzantine period, when it was the seat of a bishopric.
