Tefedest Massif
The Tefedest Massif is a vast granite mountain complex located north of the Atakor massif within the Ahaggar Cultural Park in southern Algeria. Extending over approximately 10,000 km² including its buffer zone, the massif forms a distinct geomorphological unit characterized by rugged peaks, extensive plateaus, and a network of wetlands stretching over 100 km.
Rising to 2,336 meters at Mount In Akoulmou, the Tefedest plays a crucial ecological role in the central Sahara, harboring relict and endemic plant and animal species and serving as a key refuge for biodiversity, including the critically endangered Saharan cheetah. Its preserved habitats and geological formations represent an exceptional natural system in a hyper-arid desert environment.
Tefedest Massif was submitted in 2025 to the UNESCO Tentative List in Algeria.
