Pottery Skills of the Women of Sejnane

Pottery Skills of the Women of Sejnane

The pottery skills of the women of the town of Sejnane in northern Tunisia relate to the use of certain techniques to produce terracotta artefacts and household pottery, including cooking utensils, dolls, and environment-inspired animal figurines. Women perform all stages of pottery making, where they collect clay, then cut it into blocks, crush it, purify it, and soak it in water, before kneading and shaping it.
After that, the pottery is fired in the oven and then decorated with geometric patterns, drawings, and Berber (Amazigh) inscriptions. Women sell pots in the village and on the roadsides nearby, and men participate in the selling process, making it a family craft that enhances family cohesion.
The knowledge and skills related to handcrafted pottery in Sejnane are transmitted through traditional and non-formal education, where girls are encouraged to learn this art along with school education. The National Office for Crafts also offers training courses for young women willing to dedicate themselves to this activity.

Pottery Skills of the Women of Sejnane was inscribed in 2018 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Tunisia.
