Khidr Elias Feast and its Vows

Khidr Elias Feast and its Vows

Khidr Elias feast is an occasion celebrated in Iraq in February every year to honor of Alkhidr, who is a holy figure believed to fulfill people's wishes particularly those in need. The feast includes families gathering on a hilltop wearing traditional clothes, dancing, and eating special dishes for the occasion.
Revelers write their wishes and send them with candles to float on the waters of the Tigris River. This cultural practice is passed on from generation to generation.

Khidr Elias Feast and its Vows was inscribed in 2016 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Iraq.
