Provision of Services and Hospitality During the Arba’in Visitation

Provision of services and hospitality during the Arba'in visitation is a social practice that is performed in the central and southern regions of Iraq when processions of visitors and pilgrims meet on their way to the city of Karbala to visit the shrine of Imam Hussein. This social practice is a defining element of the cultural identity of Iraq, and it is a great opportunity to display of charity through volunteerism and social cohesion as a large number of people contribute their time and resources to provide pilgrims with free services along the route.

Provision of Services and Hospitality During the Arba’in Visitation was inscribed in 2019 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Iraq.
