Moussem of Tan-Tan
Moussem of Tan-Tan is an annual gathering of nomadic peoples in the desert regions of southwestern Morocco. The gathering is a great celebration that embodies the various aspects of desert life with its customs and traditions.
It includes more than thirty tribes and is organized annually in the month of May. These gatherings were part of the seasonal agricultural and pastoral activities of the nomadic Bedouin communities, as it was an opportunity to group together, buy, sell, and exchange food and other products, in addition to organizing camel and horse breeding competitions, celebrate weddings and to consult herbalists.
The season also includes a range of cultural activities such as exhibitions of handicrafts, musical performances, folk singing, games, poetry competitions, and other Hassanie oral traditions associated with Moroccan-Saharan traditions.
Moussem of Tan-Tan was inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Morocco.
