Ceremonial Keşkek Tradition
Keşkek is traditional Turkish ceremonial dish prepared at weddings, circumcisions, and religious feasts. Men and women work together to cook wheat and meat overnight in huge cauldrons and then serve them to guests after beating the Keşkek with wooden mallets.
The preparation process includes a set of ceremonial rituals, which include reciting prayers, crowd cheers, in addition to plays and musical performances. Nearby towns and villages are also invited to a communal feast in the ceremony premises.
The traditions of preparing the Keşkek are preserved and transmitted by the master chefs to the apprentices.
Ceremonial Keşkek Tradition was inscribed in 2011 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Turkey.
