As-Samer in Jordan
As-Samer in Jordan
As-Samer in Jordan an art practiced in many regions of Jordan. It mainly consists of dancing and singing, and it is performed on various occasions, especially during marriage ceremonies.
Practitioners range from young to older individuals, and children are encouraged to participate during performances. The performance includes specific roles for specific people, as on the day of the wedding the father of the groom directs the attendees to line up and start applauding and singing, so that one sings and the other responds or two sing and respond and sometimes the whole group.
The poems chanted during the performance form an integral part of the tradition, expressing feelings of joy, peace, intimacy, and empathy among the audience. Practicing As-Samer strengthens bonds and promotes social cohesion, and attendees of all ages are encouraged to participate spontaneously in order to pass on skills and knowledge to future generations.
As-Samer in Jordan was inscribed in 2018 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Jordan.
