Souk Ahras
Souk Ahras, known in antiquity as Thagaste or Tagaste, was a prominent Roman colony in Berber North Africa. The city is renowned as the birthplace of Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential thinkers of Late Antiquity. During the Roman period, Thagaste served as an important administrative and cultural center, illustrating the close interaction between Roman urban life and indigenous Berber traditions. Its historical significance extends beyond its political role, as it played a vital part in the intellectual, religious, and cultural history of North Africa.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, Augustinian Itineraries in Algeria.
