It was built in 1823 AD, as it was the residence of the ruling Al Qasimi family and the seat of the Sharjah government headquarters. The fort is a square-shaped building with two floors in addition to an inner courtyard and three defensive towers. It has been restored several times throughout its long history, and today it is a museum that narrates the history of Sharjah and provides a glimpse into its ancient past.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, Sharjah: the Gate to Trucial States.
