Latakia, also known as Laodicea, is the principal port city of Syria, as well as the capital of the Latakia Governorate. The location of Latakia has a long history of occupation. The Phoenician city of Ramitha was located here. Latakia was an important colonia of the Roman empire in ancient Syria for seven centuries.
