Djinguereber Mosque

Djinguereber Mosque is a historic mosque and educational center located in Timbuktu, Mali. The mosque was built in 1327 AD, during the reign of Mansa Musa, the tenth mansa (king) of the Mali Empire. The mosque is built mainly of organic earth materials except for some parts that have been reinforced with limestone and mud. It was designed by Abu Ishaq al-Sahili (al-Tuwayjin), a fourteenth-century Andalusian poet and Islamic scholar who is credited with major innovations in West African architecture. Djinguereber Mosque was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988, as part of Timbuktu.
