Al-’Adudi Bimaristan

Al-’Adudi Bimaristan, or Al-’Adudi Hospital, is a historic medieval hospital located in Baghdad, Iraq. It was built in 981 AD by King 'Adud al-Dawla of the Buyid Dynasty, who funded its construction from his properties. Renowned as one of the most innovative hospitals of its time, it served as a center for medical learning and practice. The Bimaristan was strategically placed on the highest part of the west bank of the Tigris River to avoid stagnant air and insects. Despite being rebuilt after destruction in 1068 and during the Siege of Baghdad in 1258, it was not reconstructed a third time.
