Sudd Wetland
The Sudd Wetland is one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the world, located along the White Nile in South Sudan. Covering vast areas of swamps, floodplains, lagoons, and floating vegetation, its landscape changes dramatically with seasonal flooding.
The wetland supports remarkable biodiversity, providing important habitats for numerous fish, mammals, and migratory birds, including the rare shoebill and Nile lechwe. It also plays a vital role in regulating water flow and maintaining the ecological balance of the Nile Basin.
Sudd Wetland was submitted in 2017 to the UNESCO Tentative List in South Sudan.
The area was also designated in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) in 2017.
