Zajal is a form of Lebanese folk poetry that is recited or sung at social and family celebrations and in daily life. The zajal is performed by men and women either individually or collectively and deals with a variety of topics related to life, love, and nostalgia as well as political and everyday events.
It is also performed as a form of poetry competitions when poets and musicians gather in front of the audience and start reciting with the tunes of the tambourine and the darbuka.
Al-Zajal, Recited or Sung Poetry was inscribed in 2014 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Lebanon.
