The zajal is performed by men and women either individually or collectively and deals with a variety of topics related to life, love, and nostalgia as well as political and everyday events.
It is also performed as a form of poetry competitions when poets and musicians gather in front of the audience and start reciting with the tunes of the tambourine and the darbuka.
Al-Zajal, Recited or Sung Poetry was inscribed in 2014 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Lebanon.
