Handmade weaving in Upper Egypt (Sa'eed)
Handmade weaving is a weaving method that is famous in Upper Egypt (Sa’eed). It passes through complex process, including preparing weaving machines (the loom), threading, and then netting and weaving the threads to complete the piece in its final form.
This craft is still intact and based on its basic principles that have not been changed through the ages, but gradually factories began to use cotton instead of expensive silk threads. Handmade weaving is considered a source of identity and pride for the communities concerned, despite the dwindling transmission of the craft to younger generations.
Handmade weaving in Upper Egypt (Sa'eed) was inscribed in 2020 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Egypt.
