Al-Khanjar, Craft Skills and Social Practices
Al-Khanjar (dagger) is part of the traditional dress worn by men in the Sultanate of Oman during national and religious occasions, and also special occasions such as weddings. The manufacture of Al-Khanjar requires great knowledge and skills that are passed on from one generation to the next.
It is attached around the waist and includes a belt, handle, blade, scabbard, and cover, all made from a variety of materials including wood, leather, cloth, and silver. Al-Khanjar is an essential element in the Omani culture, and its knowledge is passed down from generation to generation.
It is part of the state’s emblem and has an essential role in many Omani customs, folk arts, and traditions.
Al-Khanjar, Craft Skills and Social Practices was inscribed in 2022 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Oman.
