Al Azi, Art of Performing Praise, Pride and Fortitude Poetry
Al Azi is one of the traditional poetic recitation arts in the United Arab Emirates, which is performed by a group of individuals without rhythmical or musical instruments. It consists of a full-rhymed poem based on traditional poetry, sometimes interposed with popular sayings and proverbs.
The art of Al-Azi was inherited by generations over hundreds of years until its practice gradually decreased during the mid-twentieth century, but the official authorities paid great attention to it, and it was revived again and is practiced today in national celebrations and events.
Al Azi, Art of Performing Praise, Pride and Fortitude Poetry was inscribed in 2017 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in UAE.
