The Epic of Samba Gueladio
The Epic of Samba Gueladio is a traditional legend from the Fouta Toro region. It tells the story of Samba Gueladio, the rightful heir to the throne, who was pushed aside by his uncle and forced to seek support in order to regain his place.
During his journey, he formed alliances by helping different communities, including defeating a monster that blocked access to water and recovering stolen cattle. These acts earned him the support needed to retake the throne.
In the final confrontation, Samba Gueladio defeated his uncle but chose not to kill him, reflecting values of courage, restraint and honour. The epic is transmitted through storytelling, songs and poetic performances by griots during weddings, births and cultural gatherings.
It preserves regional memory, teaches younger generations ideals such as generosity and perseverance, and celebrates inter-ethnic alliance based on mutual respect.
The Epic of Samba Gueladio was inscribed in 2024 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Mauritania.
