Hadrami Dan is a traditional gathering and performing art widely practiced in Hadhramaut Governorate. It combines improvised poetry, music, chanting, and sometimes dance in a communal setting.
A typical gathering includes at least one singer and poet, while the audience sits in rows or circles. The performance often begins with the rhythmic repetition of the word “dan” on a chosen melody, followed by improvised poetic verses that respond to the rhythm and mood of the gathering.
Its melodies, known as aswat, vary from one area of Hadhramaut to another and may be accompanied by traditional or modern instruments such as the oud, flute, violin, and drums. Hadrami Dan is passed down orally through families, community events, cultural centres, and media.
It strengthens social cohesion, dialogue, identity, and mutual understanding, while also supporting performers and others involved in organizing the gatherings.
Hadrami Dan Gathering was inscribed in 2025 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Yemen.
