Mor Hananyo Monastery
Mor Hananyo Monastery, Saffron Monastery, The Monastery of St. Ananias or Dayro d-Mor Hananyo, is an important Syriac Orthodox monastery. The monastery is located south east of Mardin, Turkey. It is located on the site of a temple dedicated to the Assyrian sun god Shamash, which was then converted into a citadel by the Romans. After the Romans withdrew from the fortress, Mor Shlemon transformed it into a monastery in 493 AD. The monastery is considered one of the oldest surviving monastic churches that are still functioning today.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, Late Antique and Medieval Churches and Monasteries of Midyat and Surrounding Area (Tur ʿAbdin).by Dûrzan cîrano, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsElevation: 913 m
