The city witnessed the height of its prosperity during the Almohad era between the 12th and 13th centuries AD, as it was an impenetrable fortress and a major port for trade across the Mediterranean between Europe and North Africa.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, Nedroma and the Trara.
