The oldest mosque on the site dates back to the 13th century AD, while the current mosque dates back to 1907. The mosque is one of the most famous architectural landmarks in Africa, and it is characterized by its distinctive architectural style of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. The Great Mosque of Djenné was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988, as part of the Old Towns of Djenné.
