Antigonea is an ancient city located in Gjirokastër County, Albania. It was founded in the 3rd century BC by Pyrrhus of Epirus, who was a Greek king and statesman of the Hellenistic period. The city was named after his wife Antigone, daughter of Berenice I and stepdaughter of Ptolemy I of Egypt. In 167 BC, the Romans destroyed the city as punishment for its inhabitants, who sided with the Macedonians during their war with the Romans.
