Agricultural terraces in Yemen
Agricultural terraces in Yemen are cultivated platforms built along the slopes of mountains and hills to create level farmland in steep terrain. This traditional technique, practiced for thousands of years, increases the amount of arable land while reducing soil erosion and improving water management. The terraces help retain rainwater, slow runoff, and support irrigation, making agriculture possible in Yemen’s rugged highland landscape. The terraces date back to at least the 3rd millennium BC and represent a remarkable example of human adaptation to mountainous environments. They extend across the Yemeni highlands from Saada in the north to Bab al-Mandab in the south.
The site is included on the UNESCO Tentative List under the official name, Agricultural Terraces in Yemen.
