Antep İşi, Drawn Thread Embroidery of Gaziantep
Antep İşi, or drawn thread embroidery of Gaziantep, is a traditional needlework technique with a history spanning centuries. It was traditionally made on white fabric using white thread, with threads carefully drawn and cut to create delicate patterns and designs.
Today, coloured fabrics and threads may also be used, but the craft still requires patience, precision and skilled handwork, making it unsuitable for mass production. The embroidery is applied to clothing, table covers, bedsheets, accessories and other items used in daily life.
Women, especially mothers and grandmothers, are the main practitioners and transmitters of the craft, passing it on through oral teaching, demonstration and practice. Workshops, courses and local organizations also help preserve the tradition.
Deeply connected to the identity of Gaziantep, Antep İşi allows women to express creativity through motifs such as birds, fruits and flowers, while also strengthening social ties through shared embroidery gatherings.
Antep İşi, Drawn Thread Embroidery of Gaziantep was inscribed in 2025 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Turkey.
