Performing Arts among the Twāyef of Ghbonten

The performing arts of the Twāyef of Ghbonten are practiced in Tunisia by troupes of poet-singers affiliated with the Ghbonten tribe. Wearing white robes and red chechias, the performers present chants and songs accompanied by the chenna, a traditional drum.
Each troupe is led by a chief performer and includes a group of male singers, with a repertoire that combines sacred and secular themes, humour and solemnity. The practice emerged in the nineteenth century after the abolition of slavery in Tunisia, drawing on African, Berber and Arab influences as a form of cultural expression and community affirmation.
Today, it is performed at festivals and public events as well as in traditional settings. Women support the practice by preparing garments and incense, while craftspeople make the costumes and accessories.
Transmitted orally through families, observation and participation, the Twāyef tradition strengthens identity, social unity and the transmission of community values.
