Al ‘azi, Elegy, Processional March and Poetry

Al ‘azi is a type of poetry sung in the northern regions of the Sultanate of Oman. It takes the form of a poetic recitation competition based on specific rhythmic movements and is interspersed with moving swords and chanting syllables between a singer poet and a choir.
Al-Azi's poems express pride in the tribe and history as it is performed on various national and social occasions.
Al ‘azi, Elegy, Processional March and Poetry was inscribed in 2012 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Oman.
