The Diwaniya, a Unifying Cultural Practice in Kuwait
The Diwaniya is a traditional social gathering space in Kuwait where people come together to converse, exchange ideas, and strengthen relationships. It may be held in a home, a public place, or a tent, and serves as an important setting for discussing family affairs, community concerns, current events, and public issues.
Diwaniyas may be small and informal, or larger during occasions such as Ramadan, weddings, funerals, and election periods. Younger generations learn the customs of the Diwaniya by observing greetings, seating etiquette, hospitality, respectful dialogue, and the role of elders.
While some gatherings maintain formal traditions, others include entertainment, games, or professional discussions among people with shared interests. Although historically centered around men, women have increasingly established their own Diwaniyas as spaces for dialogue and leadership.
The practice remains a strong symbol of Kuwaiti social life, community connection, and the transmission of values and knowledge.
The Diwaniya, a Unifying Cultural Practice in Kuwait was inscribed in 2025 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Kuwait.
