Al-Muhaibis is a popular social game that tests observation, intuition, and intelligence. It is usually played during Ramadan after Tarawih prayers, bringing together two teams who sit facing each other.
One team hides a ring in the hand of one of its players, while the opposing team tries to discover its location through careful observation and elimination. Points are awarded according to whether the ring is found or successfully concealed, and the game continues until one team reaches the agreed score.
Al-Muhaibis is accompanied by songs, chants, cheering, and a lively atmosphere. It is passed down formally through annual championships and informally within families and community gatherings.
Closely associated with Ramadan, the game strengthens social bonds, shared identity, and community spirit.
Al-Muhaibis: Social Practices and Traditions Associated with it was inscribed in 2025 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Iraq.
