  • Bisht (men’s Abaa): Skills and Practices

The Bisht, also known as the men’s Abaa, is a traditional outer garment worn by men on important occasions such as weddings, births, funerals, ceremonies, and festivals. It is draped over regular clothing, wrapped across the chest, and held to one side, leaving the right hand free for greetings.
Its style, material, and use may vary by region, season, and occasion. Made from natural materials such as wool, camel hair, or goat hair, the Bisht is produced through skilled processes including spinning, dyeing, weaving, tailoring, and hand embroidery.
Its decorated edges, often made with silk or gold- and silver-coated threads, reflect high craftsmanship. The knowledge of making and wearing the Bisht is passed down through families, workshops, schools, and traditional arts institutes.
It remains a symbol of respect, identity, social harmony, and cultural heritage.
Bisht (men’s Abaa): Skills and Practices was inscribed in 2025 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, UAE.
