Petra, or the Rose City, originally known as Raqmu to the Nabataeans, is an ancient and historical city located in Ma'an Governorate in southern Jordan. The city is famous for its rock-cut architecture and ancient water conduit system. It was founded in 312 BC and became the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. Petra includes a large group of monuments such as the Great Temple and the Temple of the Winged Lions, in addition to Al-Khazneh (the treasury) and Ad Deir, which are considered among the most important and famous of these monuments. Petra was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
